Cumulus Clouds

As many Sports Today readers know, KGO 810-AM has a new name: “The Spread -- 810-AM.” This unfortunate, some might say "repulsive" new name, refers to the station’s change from intelligent conversation to full-time coverage of sports gambling. Even Twitter boss Elon Musk gave his employees more notice than did Cumulus Media, which owns KGO. Twitter workers were told to open their emails in the next A.M. to find out if they were still employed, like they were contestants on a macabre, twisted game show.

Nevertheless, Cumulus Media wins this battle of arrogance. The KGO 810 "Mark Thompson Show," which aired from 10:00 A.M. to Noon, was interrupted just after 10:00 A.M. with a pre-recorded announcement of the format change and a "Don't let the door hit 'ya on your way out."

Other Cumulus stations include KNBR, KSAN and KSFO. Cumulus posted revenues of $233.46 million for the quarter which ended September 2022. Cumulus shares have lost about 38% since the beginning of the year. It may be time for a pre-recorded message to management.

Sometimes it's not what you do, but how you do it. In this case, Cumulus hit the Daily Double.

Warriors' One-Game Experiment

I enjoyed the last game in which four starters took well-deserved breaks and G-League and peripheral players had a chance to showcase their talents for extended minutes. They more than held their own vs. the Pelicans and the impressive Zion. They're a good group with positive energy. That means "Wins!"

Heartfelt

Recent beliefs that Jews are today's problem has resulted in violence. Kyrie Irving, Kanye West, and others whose hostility and prejudice against Jewish people is dangerous and must stop! Words matter. We are all in this together and are of one blood.

I'm reminded of the time when I was a young Black person growing up during the 50s in Oakland, the Jews were the only merchants who would extend credit to Blacks. Granted, their rates were high, but it gave the borrower an opportunity to establish credit to be used to purchase homes, cars, jewelry, clothing, and furniture. It provided them with the opportunity to better themselves and become productive citizens. I shall always remember that.

Today I don't look at people for their religion, but rather their character. I know and love many Jews and some are in my Hall of Fame.

Classy World Champion

Second baseman Jose Altuve and Houston manager Dusty Baker before Game 3

Dusty's Dream: Astros Win World Series

by Amaury Pi-González

Manager Dusty Baker has done it! His Houston Astros have won the 2022 World Series, beating the Philadelphia Phillies 4-1 in 6 games.

This title, his first as a manager, should cinch his induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame, among managers, adding to the over 2,000 wins.

This was his ultimate dream since he became a manager. He was a very good player, as we remember, for 19 years who also won a ring in 1981 as a member of the World Champion Los Angeles Dodgers. A career that began with the Atlanta Braves, where he was a teammate of the real home run holder Hank Aaron, Dusty had a front row at history in Atlanta. Dusty was in the on-deck circle when Hank Aaron hit his 715th home run, passing Babe Ruth.

Winning a World Series as a player is one thing, but as a manager is totally different. A manager carries the frustration of his team. As a manager, Dusty's frustrations were as recent as 2020 when he was coaching for the Astros, lost to the Tampa Bay Rays and was eliminated in Game 7 during the American League Championship Series.

2021 was his second season with the Astros, right after taking the helm from manager A.J Hinch and the much-publicized cheating scandal. He took that Astros team to the World Series only to lose to the Atlanta Braves in six games. At 73 years old, Dusty is now the oldest manager ever to win a World Series. Before Dusty, it was Jack McKeon who managed the Marlins of 2003 and won the World Series at the age of 72.

The Houston players are grateful and happy for Dusty Baker. He took them into a new era of Houston Astros baseball. José Altuve was basically booed by fans all over the country every time he came to the plate, for the cheating scandal that began in 2017. He is the one player that was with the Astros during their bad years and then MLB conducted an investigation in 2019 after two Astros players claimed they were stealing signs.

The Astros players and organization feel today like Dusty Baker was exactly the type of man they needed at the helm to bring them to the 'promised land' and he did.

José Altuve currently has the longest tenure wearing an Astros uniform. He was with the team in 2012 when the team was in the National League Central division and they ended with a 55-107 record, and the next season, 2013, the first year the Astros moved from the NL to the American League, as they ended with a dreadful 51-111 record.

After Dusty Baker, nobody enjoys this World Series Championship more than the veteran José Altuve, who called this title "a dream come true." Altuve is the only player who was with the Astros during those very bad seasons in two different leagues. He was celebrating and happy for Dusty Baker who said, "Houston is my town".

Like many managers, Dusty had to endure all the criticism for his decisions. Dusty, who was an excellent player in the majors for 19 seasons, was facing a different type of criticism as a manager. Some were brutal commentaries by prominent baseball writers of national acclaim, especially during the 2002 World Series, where Dusty's Giants lost to the Anaheim Angels. I remember reading one; "Dusty cannot manage a bullpen”

Johnnie B. "Dusty" Baker was born in 1949 and in 1967 was selected in the 26th round of the MLB Draft. He has been involved in baseball for the majority of his 73-years on this planet, as a player and as a manager, and is rejoicing with his players and having all the fun in the world.

Sometimes we sarcastically say, "this could not have happened to a better person,” but in Dusty Baker's case, it is true, "this could not have happened to a better person." I have been privileged to cover his career as a player and a manager. One word comes to mind that best describes the essence of this man.... honesty. No wonder every player wants to play for Dusty.

Bravo Dusty!

Giants Beat

by Maria Guardado

As soon as the World Series comes to an end, offseason business will kick into high gear for the Giants. Here’s a handy FAQ to get you ready for the start of Hot Stove season:

Which players are free agents?

First baseman Brandon Belt, outfielder Joc Pederson and relievers José Álvarez and Shelby Miller. Left-hander Carlos Rodón is also expected to opt out of his two-year deal with the Giants, leaving $22.5 million on the table to seek a more lucrative free-agent contract this winter.

Are any of them likely to receive qualifying offers? When is the deadline for that?

Pinder? Puk? 5 questions for the

A's offseason

This story was excerpted from Martin Gallegos' A's Beat newsletter. To read the full newsletter, click here. And subscribe to get it regularly

OAKLAND -- An interesting component of this offseason for the A’s will be how they go about structuring their roster in year two of a rebuild that can improve upon what was just the second 100-loss team in Oakland history.

Of course, the A’s also face some looming off-field decisions that could make a major impact on their future. Here are five questions they face this offseason:

1. Can the A’s finally reach a deal for a new ballpark in Oakland?

Though the A's gained plenty of positive momentum in their quest for a new stadium, the unofficial deadline set by team president Dave Kaval for the Oakland City Council to take the club’s waterfront ballpark proposal at Howard Terminal to a final vote came and went. Kaval’s hope was that a final vote would take place in late 2022, with the current city council members and Oakland mayor Libby Schaaf -- a major proponent and advocate of the A’s stadium pursuit -- still in office. With Oakland’s general elections taking place on Nov. 8 (due to Oakland's two-term limit, Schaaf cannot run for reelection), communication between the two sides will have to continue into 2023 with a new mayoral administration and city council.

Winter Quarter 2023 -- BUS 119

Title: Make Sense of the Madness:

The Evolving Business of College Athletics

Instructor -- Andy Dolich

The business of college athletics is booming. Close to 2,000 athletic departments throughout the U.S. generate $25.5 billion in media rights while attracting over 190 million enthusiastic, ticket buying fans. This industry is evolving real time in increasingly complex ways. The recent news that USC and UCLA are leaving the Pac-12 for the Big Ten Conference has created waves of uncertainty and speculation about the future. Just a year ago, college athletes were first permitted to profit from the rights for their Name, Image or Likeness (NIL) while on the playing fields of their schools. What do these seismic changes mean for college athletes, administrators and fans now and

in the future?

This course examines the business of college sports past,

present and future.

Session One -- Introduction on the Business of College Sports

Session Two -- Overview of the changes in the Pac-12 and beyond -- Ted Robinson

Session Three -- Economics -- Dr. Dan Rascher

Session Four -- The Media -- Jon Wilner

Session Five -- Athletes and coaches - Ben Braun

Session Six -- Final Round -- Table with representatives of involved

constituencies.

Sessions will include interactive discussions from industry experts.

Students will leave this course with insights into the revolutionary changes affecting the business of college sports.

More 9ers Football

Don't pay the Ransom --

I've escaped...

by Howard Pearlstein

Wow – what a difference a healthier O line makes.

Especially when you add in a newly acquired world-class All-pro superhero Running back/Receiver/Part-time QB.

And the full-time QB has at least a few more options on any play.

And when the defense is more fully populated by at least SOME of the best players, e.g., Bosa, Hufanga, Kinlaw, Jimmy Ward, et al.

But before the Lambs game, it was different. *

Mahomes is a very good QB, occasionally showing greatness, and unfortunately for opponents, too often for comfort.

Andy Reid is a very very good coach and often rises to greatness.

Jimmy Garoppolo, given an O line and options is a very good QB.

Kyle Shanahan is a very good coach and sometimes shows flashes of greatness.

Meaning the 9ers can win a game if they are at their very best and the Chiefs aren’t.

And Trey Lance is going to be a rookie again next year, needing to learn a lot of what a newbie QB learns on the field.

And among those things, damnit, the first one is to learn to slide. And he needs to practice it as often as Steph Curry practiced learning to do a side-jump for a "drop-back" shot to compensate for a slight height disadvantage, i.e., over and over and over again until it’s second nature in an imminently cataclysmic moment.

In football as in life, it's always a contrast between what you’ve got and what you think you’re going to get.

The almost irresistible temptation is to set the moment aside while happily looking at a future in which McCaffery and Deebo and Mitchell and Aiyuk and Kittle are all in the game and on the field, if not all at the same time.

And of course, when that is what is happening, well then, remember to be gracious in victory. Maybe next week.

*Oh, one other thing, in the second half of the Rams game, the announcers kept wondering where the D-line’s highly lauded goal-line stand would be, a bit sarcastically, wondering if it would show up.

They seemed to not notice that in the first half, the D-line stopped the Rams at the goal line 2, 3, 4 times in a row, except each time a penalty -- usually not a relevant part of having held the line -- caused the down to be repeated.

So much for announcers who fly in the week of the game and like to chat about their favorite “that time when we…”

As to “being modest in victory,” we’ll see how well those changes work out next Sunday.

Howard Pearlstein has been a few places and done a few things.

An old friend once said, "Howard, you live your life like you're trying to fill in a dust jacket blurb." Well, then all I have to do is write a book that will get published.

Joe DiMaggio -- From the Autograph Collection of Ross Robinson

Here is the menu I had signed by the Yankee Clipper in approximate 1953. As I remember, the family was having lunch in his restaurant and I, at approximately nine-years-of-age, walked over by myself and asked for his autograph. I remember he was very gracious

about signing.

I thought baseball was a game of stats.

Football is also a game of stats.

For the fun of it, what is the record for yards lost in a sack, including the yards lost because a fumble resulted?

(YES, there is a stat for yards lost in a sack

without a fumble.)

If you get this one, you are either a steel trap for trivial information or have too much time on your hands...

Bears Earn 1-1 Draw With Cardinal

Cal Ranks Fourth In The Conference At The Conclusion

Of The Regular Season

BERKELEY – California women's soccer earned a 1-1 tie with Stanford in the regular season finale, extending the team's unbeaten streak to five. With a 5-3-3 record against conference opponents, Cal now ranks fourth in the Pac-12, the team's first time breaking into the top-four since 2015.

It was a close game between the Bears and the Cardinal at Edwards Stadium, with the two teams gridlocked at 0-0 as they entered the halfway point. Keely Roy had the first opportunity of the match, taking a shot that went out the top of the goal in the first minute-and-a-half.

Karlie Lema then took two beautiful shots on target, both saved by Stanford's keeper Ryan Campbell, before the Cardinal got their first opportunity in minute 9, a shot which was blocked by Sydney Collins in a massive defensive save.

FIELD OF PLAY

For the past 60 years, Michael Zagaris has taken his camera behind the scenes of the NFL, capturing the moments that define America’s game. With unparalleled access—42 Super Bowls, 49 seasons as team photographer for the San Francisco 49ers, and a behind-the-scenes passport to the rest of the NFL—Zagaris takes his aim beyond the field and to the locker room, the bench, the practices, and the training camps. His intimate portraits convey the nerves, the tension, the pain, and the elation with emotional depth and the clarity of a longtime insider.

With contributions from celebrated Hall of Famers Joe Montana, Ronnie Lott, and Fred Biletnikoff, as well as text from renowned sportswriter Steve Cassady and sociologist Dr. Harry Edwards, Field of Play highlights Zagaris’s storied career as a photographer, showcasing the irresistible force of football and celebrates its enduring presence.

The New York Yankees are the greatest dynasty, not only in baseball but in all of sports. The Yankees, in fact, embody a series of dynasties, from Ruth-Gehrig through Jeter-Rivera. But the absolute greatest Yankees were the 1949-1953 pinstripers, winners of an unprecedented five consecutive World Series. The Yankee Way, Hall of Fame manager Tony La Russa writes in the book's forward, is “full of Yankee winning keys, star-studded competitions, and insights about one of baseball's historically fascinating periods.” Key contributors to this dynasty, including Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Billy Martin, Phil Rizzuto, and manager Casey Stengel, are remembered by their teammate, Charlie Silvera, catcher and co-author.

Dave Newhouse was an award-winning sportswriter/columnist for the Oakland Tribune before his retirement. He has continued his work as an author and The Yankee Way is his eighteenth book. He lives with his wife, Patsy, an artist, in Oakland, CA.

Many people -- maybe even you -- have been getting out on their bikes more during Shelter-in-Place. "Check for Bikes" clings and bumper stickers are great ways to keep bicyclists safer out there on the road by promoting awareness by drivers to share the road. Keep safe out there and keep your neighbors safe by using or passing along vinyl clings for inside a car window or windshield and 4" circular bumper stickers. We have Youth and Spanish versions, too!
